Return of the King [Don't read if you haven't seen the movie]

Before I start raving about the movie, let me give you some advice. Never watch a 3 1/2 hour movie on a weekday at 12 in the morning, no matter how good or how much you can't wait. It's even worst when you're driving and the cinema is hours away. Driving home that night was one of the worst experience ever!

Anyway, on to the movie.

Return of the King was a blast. I had extremely high expectations for the movie, since the third book was my favourite of the three. Suffice to say, I was disappointed. A lot of the parts left out of the movie happened to be my favourite parts in the books. The Denethor-Faramir subplots were way underplayed. Eowyn and Faramir's romance we're not even touched. Sam forgot to wear the ring. The scouring of the shire didn't happen. And on and on.

But don't let all that deter you from watching the movie. It's farking brilliant. The good parts outweigh the bad in so many ways that you don't even start to think about it until long after the movie's over.

The movie started of with a chilling tone, the retelling of the transformation of Smeagol into Gollum. The descent into madness was one of nightmare, a masterpiece of cinematography and storytelling. Other great scenes include Pippins song, Eowyn facing the Witch-King, and Sam's line on the slopes of Mount Doom; "I might not be able to carry the ring for you, Mr Frodo.......but I can carry you!".

The hobbits really come into their own in this one. No longer do they have to live in the shadow of Elves and dwarves and kings. Though I have to say, the ending where everyone kneels to them is a bit overdone, IMHO.

*sigh* Time to re-read the books.
